Handmade Gaudy Sweaters

$300.00

It takes anywhere from four to six months of Friday knitting sessions (depending on whether it’s nine months of winter in the Northwoods of Wisconsin or three months of summer) to finish a sweater, and the final day when the buttons are sewn in place is always exciting.  The end of a long project means that the fun of choosing colors for the next sweater will soon begin!

Description

John’s Mom belongs to a small group of old ladies (four) who knit every Friday afternoon.  Of course, they don’t just sit around clicking their needles; they chat!  And one cannot follow a difficult pattern and chat; it’s just not possible to do so and not knit when you should have purled or purl when you should have knitted.  So . . . John’s Mom found a simple sweater pattern that was knitted from side to side (beginning with one sleeve and ending with the other sleeve) instead of from bottom to top.  It employed only one stitch, stockinette, which means knit one row and purl the next, over and over and over again–pretty boring.  What isn’t boring is her huge bin of yarns of all colors and textures–she loves color and she loves the feel of varying textures!  So . . .  she figured out how she could incorporate the things she loves into a simple pattern and not only be able to knit and chat at the same time, but end up with a unique and stunning vertically striped sweater, one that in all probability will not be seen anywhere else.
